15 handicap club distances, average score and stats

A typical 15 handicapper hits a driver about 236 yards (216 metres), a 7 iron about 154 yards (141 m) and a pitching wedge about 121 yards (111 m), based on Shot Scope's data. On a par 72, a 15 handicapper's average scores per hole add up to a round of about 89 to 90.

A 15 is a very good place to be. It is better than the Australian average, and it is the handicap where most golfers are one or two fixes away from single figures being a real conversation. Here is the full bag, the scoring picture and where the shots are hiding.

15 handicap club distances: the full bag

All figures are Shot Scope P-Avg (the best and worst 10 percent of shots removed), measured by GPS on course, so they are where the ball finished rather than pure carry.

Wedges. Shot Scope's wedge data for a 15 handicapper shows 77 yards with a 52 degree, 56 yards with a 56 degree and 44 yards with a 60 degree. Those include chips and pitches, not just full swings, so they are much shorter than your full wedge distance. Measure your own full wedge carries on a launch monitor instead.

Treat these as typical, not targets. Your lofts, shafts, ball and swing all move these numbers. What matters is that your own gaps are even and predictable.

Look at the gaps

A couple of things jump out of the 15 handicap numbers:

  • The 4 iron (186 yd) and 3 hybrid (195 yd) sit close together, and the 4 iron is only 17 yards past the 5 iron. Many 15s get more from a hybrid than a long iron.
  • The 7 wood (179 yd) overlaps the 4 iron and 4 hybrid. If your bag has all three, one is probably spare.
  • Driver to 3 wood is 24 yards. A normal gap.

A launch monitor session hitting ten balls with each club will show your own gaps and overlaps in half an hour. See how far should I hit each club? for how the 15s compare with other handicaps.

15 handicap average score

Handicaps are not averages, which confuses everyone. Under the World Handicap System (Rule 5 of the Rules of Handicapping), your Handicap Index is the average of the best 8 score differentials from your most recent 20 rounds. So a typical round sits above your handicap, not on it.

Shot Scope publishes average scores by hole type for a 15 handicapper:

Hole15 handicap average
Par 33.83
Par 45.05
Par 55.91

On a par 72 course with four par 3s, ten par 4s and four par 5s, that adds up to:

(4 x 3.83) + (10 x 5.05) + (4 x 5.91) = 89.5

That is our own arithmetic, using Shot Scope's averages, so treat it as a guide. Course layout and difficulty move it around. But "a 15 handicapper usually shoots around 90" is a fair rule of thumb on this data.

Is a 15 handicap good?

Yes. For context:

A 15 is better than the average Australian male golfer. Dilly would take it in a heartbeat.

15 handicap stats vs a 10 handicap

What does it take to get from 15 to 10? Shot Scope's "law of averages" data shows where the strokes go:

Stat15 handicap10 handicap
Fairways hit47%50%
Greens in regulation23%35%
Up and down35%40%
Three-putt rate10%8%
Average on par 4s5.054.67
Average on par 5s5.915.52

Sources: Shot Scope 15 handicap and 10 handicap law of averages posts.

The standout: fairways hardly change, but greens in regulation jump from 23 to 35 percent. That is approach play. Iron distance control (knowing exactly how far each iron goes) and strike are where a 15 finds the most shots. Short game and putting matter too, but the big gap is hitting more greens.

What a 15 handicapper should practise

  1. Iron distance control. Know your carry for every iron to within a few metres, and your spread. That is a launch monitor job.
  2. Strike. Check smash factor on your irons (see smash factor explained). Poor strike costs distance and direction.
  3. Wedges inside 100 metres. Up-and-downs are the next gap. Build a wedge distance chart.
  4. Lag putting. Cutting three-putts is the cheapest shots in golf.

Our practice plan to break 90 (and 80) turns this into a weekly routine, and the 7 iron distance guide goes deep on the most-asked club. Our handicap targets page has launch monitor numbers by handicap.

How Pickle Shot helps

A 15 handicap is exactly the example Pickle Shot is built around. The app is pre-launch and built for the Rapsodo MLM2 Pro first. Set your current and goal handicap (say 15 heading to 10), and it will show what a golfer at your goal typically hits with each club, map every session against it, and tell you the biggest gap to close. For most 15s that is iron strike and distance control. Early access opens to the waitlist first. See how it works.

Questions

How far does a 15 handicapper hit each club?

Shot Scope data puts a 15 handicapper at about 236 yards (216 m) with a driver, 212 yards (194 m) with a 3 wood, 154 yards (141 m) with a 7 iron and 121 yards (111 m) with a pitching wedge. These are P-Avg figures, which trim the best and worst 10 percent, and measure where the ball finished.

What does a 15 handicap golfer usually shoot?

Using Shot Scope's average scores for a 15 handicapper (3.83 on par 3s, 5.05 on par 4s, 5.91 on par 5s) on a par 72 course with four par 3s, ten par 4s and four par 5s, the arithmetic comes to about 89 or 90. That fits how handicaps work: your Handicap Index comes from your best 8 of your last 20 rounds, so a typical round sits above it.

What does a 15 handicap mean?

Roughly, it means a golfer who, on their better days, plays about 15 shots over the course's standard on a course of average difficulty. Under the World Handicap System, your Handicap Index is based on the average of the best 8 score differentials from your most recent 20 rounds.

Is a 15 handicap a good golfer?

It is better than average. Golf Australia's October 2025 report puts the average GA Handicap at 18.16 for men and boys and 28.62 for women and girls. USGA 2025 data has 14.0 for men and 28.8 for women.

What stats separate a 15 handicap from a 10 handicap?

In Shot Scope's data, fairways are similar (47 percent vs 50 percent), but greens in regulation jump from 23 percent to 35 percent, up-and-downs from 35 percent to 40 percent, and the three-putt rate falls from 10 percent to 8 percent. Approach play is the biggest gap.
