The average male amateur drives it about 224 yards (205 metres) and the average female amateur about 176 yards (161 metres), according to Arccos's 2026 driving distance report. By handicap, Shot Scope's data runs from 204 yards (187 m) for a 25 handicapper to 285 yards (261 m) for scratch.
So if you are watching the pros bomb it 300 and wondering what is wrong with you, probably nothing. Here are the real numbers, by handicap and by age, and the free distance most amateurs leave on the tee.
Driver distance by handicap (Shot Scope, 2026)
Shot Scope's P-Avg drops the best and worst 10 percent of drives. Because Shot Scope is GPS based, the figure is where the ball finished (carry plus roll).

Look at the fairways column. Fairways hit barely changes from scratch to a 25 handicap. Better players are not dramatically straighter off the tee in this data. They hit it further, which leaves shorter approach shots.
Driver distance by handicap (Arccos, 2026)
Arccos's 2026 report (2025 data, more than 5 million rounds and around 10 million drives on par 4s and 5s) shows:

Arccos also found that 30+ handicappers ended up in a penalty or recovery situation on 45.1 percent of drives, against 12 percent for 0 to 4.9 handicappers. So while the fairway percentage might not move much, how badly you miss certainly does. Average male driving distance was 224.0 yards back in 2018, so on this data amateurs have not really got longer in eight years, despite all the new drivers.

Arccos's 2026 report has men aged 15 to 19 at 240 yards (219 m) and men in their 70s at 190 yards (174 m). The two datasets use different methods (Shot Scope's P-Avg vs Arccos's average), which is why the numbers do not line up exactly. The trend is the same: fairly flat until your 50s, then a gradual drop.
Driver numbers by handicap on a launch monitor (Trackman)
Trackman's Combine data gives the launch monitor view of the same story, for male golfers:

Notice that the average golfer and the bogey golfer swing at almost the same speed as a 10 handicapper, but lose ball speed. That is strike.
Tour driving distance
- PGA Tour, 2026 season: 306.0 yards (280 m) average, from the PGA Tour's stats page through 20 September 2026.
- Trackman tour carry averages: PGA Tour 282 yards (258 m) carry at 115 mph club speed. LPGA 223 yards (204 m) carry at 96 mph.
The free distance: the average amateur's driver
In 2014 Trackman looked at the average male amateur (about a 14 to 15 handicap) in its Combine data, more than 10,000 golfers. Same club speed, two outcomes:

That is 24 yards (about 22 metres) more carry without swinging any faster. It comes from three things:
- Better strike (ball speed up from 132.6 to 140.1 mph, a smash factor jump from about 1.42 to 1.50). See smash factor explained.
- Higher launch (12.6 to 14.7 degrees).
- Less spin (3,275 down to 2,300 rpm). See spin rate by club.
How to add driver distance, in order
- Find the middle of the face. Check smash factor. Get it heading towards 1.45 before anything else.
- Hit up on it a little. A slightly upward angle of attack raises launch and lowers spin. The average amateur in Trackman's data hits down on the driver (about -1.6 to -2 degrees).
- Check spin. Well above 3,000 rpm with a driver usually means distance lost to a ballooning flight.
- Then chase speed, once the first three are sorted.

What is the PGA Tour average driving distance?
The PGA Tour's own stats page showed a tour average of 306.0 yards (about 280 m) for 2026, through 20 September. Trackman's tour averages give PGA Tour driver carry as 282 yards and LPGA carry as 223 yards.
How can I hit my driver further without swinging harder?
Improve strike (smash factor) and launch conditions. Trackman found the average male amateur, swinging at 93.4 mph, carried it 204 yards, while optimal launch and spin at the same speed would carry 228 yards. Higher launch, lower spin and centred contact are the free yards.
